Guri Sandvik

After several years as a photographer, Guri Sandvik wanted a change. She started to experiment with three-dimensional forms in clay about 10 years ago.

Guri’s design language is minimalistic, at times architectonic. She is interested in the dynamics of the space between the objects, and wants each individual object to fulfil its own purpose. Her creations are both functional objects and sculptural forms – slipcased in coloured porcelain and terracotta – leaving a vague, deliberate trace of the handmade in the surface of the object.

The working process is long and varied. Everything from idea creation/sketches, production of plaster models and molds, dyeing the clay, casting, polishing, glazing and firing. Guri´s participating in all these processes gives substance to the finished product and satisfaction for the artisan.

Guri’s designs are inspired by old containers, some observed in museums. She likes traveling while studying old and new ceramics, and has attended workshops in Italy and Japan.

Guri has participated in several exhibitions since 2013 including Årsutstillingen 2018 in Fredrikstad, House of Norway- Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt 2019 and Sasama Ceramic Art Festival in Japan 2019. She has received several grants from the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts and has been nominated for Bo Bedres design awards four times.
